Every square tells a story. Every butterfly carries a legacy. And every stitch was made by someone who understands the love, grief, and generosity represented in Legacy of Life Hawai‘i’s fifth Donor Memorial Quilt.
The quilt was created entirely in-house by Kim Reid, a Family Services Coordinator with Legacy of Life Hawai‘i. Through her work, Kim supports donor families and walks alongside them as they honor their loved ones’ lives and lifesaving gifts. That personal connection made creating the quilt especially meaningful.

The quilt features butterflies, a symbol Legacy of Life Hawai‘i uses to represent transformation, renewed life, and the lasting impact of donation. Kim carefully arranged the butterflies to appear as though they are moving across the quilt—from one person to another—reflecting how a donor’s gift continues through the lives of others.

Each butterfly was individually hand-stitched to reflect how the gift of life continues from one person to another.

The completed quilt honors 31 donors and includes 44 customized squares and 162 individually hand-stitched butterflies. Behind every square is a person who was deeply loved, a family who entrusted Legacy of Life Hawai‘i with their loved one’s memory and a legacy that continues through donation.
Made by one of our own Family Services Coordinators, this quilt represents more than 18 months of artistry and dedication. It reflects the care donor families receive from the Legacy of Life Hawai‘i ‘ohana and the promise that their loved ones and their gifts will always be remembered.
When enough donor squares are received for a sixth quilt, Kim says she will begin again. What the finished fifth quilt reveals is patience, prayer and aloha, lovingly stitched together in honor of 31 generous donors whose gifts—and whose stories—continue to live on.
An avid quilter, Kim set aside her personal projects and devoted approximately 18 months of her free time to creating the memorial. Each donor’s square required several hours of careful, detailed work. For Kim, those quiet hours became a time for reflection.
